The Collapsed Layers

When you read a news article or long-form piece, multiple layers are collapsed together invisibly:
- What happened (observation)
- What it means (interpretation)
- Within what framework (theoretical lens)
- According to whom (voice/perspective)
- With what certainty (epistemic status)
Traditional media collapses all of this into a single authoritative voice. You can't see where observation ends and interpretation begins. Curia's architecture is designed to separate and preserve each layer explicitly.
Curia's Thesis
What if the artifact itself preserved these distinctions?
Rather than producing collapsed text that requires hermeneutic skill to unpack, Curia produces structured artifacts where the layers are explicit:
- Physical events — just facts
- Narratives — attributed claims
- Epistemic tagging — stated vs implied vs inferred knowledge levels
- Framework dependencies — marked explicitly
- Uncertainty — preserved, not resolved
Summarization: "What does this text say?" (lossy compression)
Curia: "What is the structure of meaning in this text?" (preserved epistemics)
Four Core Architectural Pillars
1. Framework Separation
Never collapse observation → inference → theory → worldview. Scientific models marked as models, not facts. Each epistemic layer explicitly distinguished.
2. Permissible Inference Levels (PIL)
PIL 1: Stated facts only. PIL 2: Logical implications. PIL 3: Stable domain knowledge. Predictions forbidden. Every inference tagged.
3. Uncertainty Surfacing
When ambiguity exists, it's preserved explicitly. News cards have "Uncertain" sections. Knowledge cards never resolve vagueness for narrative smoothness.
4. Multi-Perspective Preservation
Actor claims separated from physical events. Each narrative attributed (actor, stance, evidence). Never synthesize into single voice.
